Church of Saint Mary in Hłybokaje, Eastern Orthodox church in Hlybokaje, Belarus
The Church of Saint Mary in Hlybokaje is a brick Baroque church standing in the center of the Belarusian town of Hlybokaje. It has two bell towers with curved domes, large arched windows, and a white and cream facade with decorative detailing.
The building was erected in 1654 as a Catholic Carmelite chapel, part of a monastic complex that once stood in the area. In the 19th century it was converted to an Eastern Orthodox church, following the broader religious changes that swept through the region.
The church belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church and draws worshippers from the surrounding area, especially on major Orthodox feast days. Visitors who come on a Sunday can watch people entering through the main door dressed in traditional Sunday clothes.
The church stands close to the main road through Hlybokaje and is easy to reach on foot from the town center. Visiting outside of service times gives you more space to look at the exterior and the two bell towers up close.
The building was designed by Johann Christoph Glaubitz, an architect known for mixing Baroque forms with the look of Orthodox churches, which was unusual at the time. He also worked on several other churches in the region, so his style appears again and again across the area.
