Silichy, Ski resort in Lahojsk District, Belarus.
Silichy is a ski resort in the Lahojsk District of Belarus, set in the hilly terrain northeast of Minsk. The resort has several runs spread across a hill, with tracks suited to different skill levels.
Silichy opened in January 2005 and was one of the first modern ski centers in Belarus. It was built at a time when the country began developing winter sports facilities outside the capital.
The establishment of Silichy represents a shift in Belarus's tourism sector, introducing winter sports facilities that meet international standards for local participants.
The resort sits about 25 miles (40 km) from Minsk and can be reached by car or bus without difficulty. The season generally runs from December to March, though snow conditions can vary from one year to the next.
Silichy sits on one of the few hills in the otherwise flat landscape around Minsk, which makes it one of the rare places in the country where downhill skiing is possible at all. The resort uses artificial snow systems to keep the runs open even when natural snowfall is low.
