West Polesie Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, Biosphere reserve in Eastern Europe, Belarus Poland Ukraine.
West Polesie Transboundary Biosphere Reserve spans low-lying areas of wetlands, forests, and grasslands situated between the Bug and Wieprz rivers, containing more than 100 lakes. The landscape consists of a mosaic of different habitats that together form an interconnected system of waterlogged environments.
The reserve was established in 2012 through the unification of three separate protected areas: Shatskiy Biosphere Reserve, Polesie National Park, and Pribuzhskoye Polesie Biosphere Reserve. This merger created a more coordinated approach to conservation across the transboundary landscape.
The region displays traditional wooden architecture that reflects both eastern and western European building styles found throughout the Polesie area. Visitors can observe these construction methods in settlements and older structures that show how local people have built their homes over time.
The reserve is very large and requires time to explore, so visitors should learn about access points and visitor facilities before arriving. The best time to visit is from spring through autumn when routes are more accessible and wildlife viewing becomes easier.
The reserve serves as a critical breeding ground for rare bird species such as the aquatic warbler and various raptors including the lesser spotted eagle. These birds rely on the wetlands during their annual migrations and for raising their young.
