West Polesie Transboundary Biosphere Reserve
West Polesie Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, Biosphere reserve in Eastern Europe, Belarus Poland Ukraine.
The reserve extends across 263,016 hectares of wetlands, forests, and grasslands, containing more than 100 lakes between the Bug and Wieprz river basins.
The establishment of the reserve in 2012 united three protected areas: Shatskiy Biosphere Reserve, Polesie National Park, and Pribuzhskoye Polesie Biosphere Reserve.
The territory maintains traditional wooden architecture that reflects the influences of eastern and western European building techniques in the Polesie region.
The reserve supports 68,000 residents in buffer zones through economic activities including agriculture, forestry, fishing, and regulated tourism activities.
The area serves as a crucial nesting ground for endangered bird species, including the aquatic warbler and various raptors such as lesser spotted eagles.
