Fortress of Louisbourg, Historic fortress and national site in Cape Breton, Canada
The reconstructed stone walls and fortifications extend along the coastline, featuring military buildings, residences, and defensive structures spanning 20 hectares.
French colonists established the fortress in 1713 as a defensive position, which changed hands twice between French and British forces during significant conflicts.
The site includes interpretive centers highlighting both French colonial heritage and Mi'kmaw traditions through exhibits, artifacts, and educational programs.
Visitors can access guided tours, period demonstrations, and educational programs from June through October, with reduced services during winter months.
The reconstruction project employed local coal miners in the 1960s, resulting in the recreation of over 60 buildings representing one-quarter of the original fortress.
