Cape Breton, Regional municipality in Nova Scotia, Canada
Cape Breton Regional Municipality spans coastal areas and inland communities across the eastern portion of Nova Scotia. The region consists of several towns and villages connected by natural landscapes and waterways.
The area was created in 1995 when eight separate municipalities merged into one administrative unit. This consolidation reshaped how the eastern Nova Scotia region is governed and organized.
The region preserves Mi'kmaq heritage through programs visitors can experience today, and displays the Fortress of Louisbourg as one of North America's largest historical reconstructions. These places tell the story of the area's long past and how different peoples lived here together.
The Port of Sydney serves as the main gateway to the region and is used by cruise ships and commercial vessels. Visitors can best explore the area by using coastal roads and visiting smaller towns based on their interests.
The region is home to specialized maritime training facilities that educate professionals for the shipping and coastal industries. These institutions attract students from around the world and shape the academic life of the area.
