Spectacle Island is a small island of about 60 acres off the southwestern coast of Nova Scotia near Wedgeport. The island features different habitats including beaches, salt marshes, and wetlands that are vital for various bird species.
The island has been recognized in recent decades as a vital stopover for migratory birds along the Atlantic Flyway. Its protection was supported by donations, including a major gift from the MapleCross fund, to secure the island permanently for conservation.

The island hosts several endangered bird species including Red Knots and Swallows that are listed as threatened in Canada. These species rely heavily on such protected habitats for their survival as their populations decline globally.
