Spectacle Island, island in Victoria County, Nova Scotia, Canada
Spectacle Island is a small island of about 60 acres off the southwestern coast of Nova Scotia near Wedgeport. The island features different habitats including beaches, salt marshes, and wetlands that are vital for various bird species.
The island has been recognized in recent decades as a vital stopover for migratory birds along the Atlantic Flyway. Its protection was supported by donations, including a major gift from the MapleCross fund, to secure the island permanently for conservation.
The name Spectacle Island refers to the sight of numerous birds that can be observed here. The place is valued by bird watchers who come to spot rare or unusual species, especially during stormy winds when birds seek shelter on the islands.
Visitors can best explore the island from April through October when bird activity is highest and conditions are most favorable. Reaching the island typically requires a boat, so visitors should prepare for local boat transport or guided boat tours.
The island hosts several endangered bird species including Red Knots and Swallows that are listed as threatened in Canada. These species rely heavily on such protected habitats for their survival as their populations decline globally.
