Casavant Frères Ltée. Opus 1841, Pipe organ at Highland Arts Theatre in Sydney, Canada
The Casavant Frères Opus 1841 is a pipe organ housed in Highland Arts Theatre in Sydney on Cape Breton Island, containing more than 2,000 pipes arranged across three manuals and pedal. The pipes vary greatly in size, from very small to quite large, combining to create a full range of sounds.
The organ originated in 1911 as Opus 452 for St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. In 1946 it underwent major reconstruction with electrified mechanisms and became known as Opus 1841.
The organ plays a central role in performances at Highland Arts Theatre today. It gives classical concerts and orchestra events a distinctive sound quality that visitors experience only in this space.
Visitors will hear the organ best during regular concert events at the theatre. Since it is a working concert instrument, checking the current schedule will help you plan the best time to experience it.
The instrument is the largest of its kind on Cape Breton Island and features 33 speaking stops. This number of stops gives the organist an impressive palette of different sounds to perform a wide variety of musical works.
