Toronto Zoo, Zoo in Scarborough, Toronto, Canada.
The Toronto Zoo is a zoological garden in Scarborough, a district in the eastern part of Toronto, covering more than 280 hectares. The facility is divided into seven geographic zones that represent different continental habitats.
The facility opened in 1974 under the name Metropolitan Toronto Zoo, replacing an earlier city zoo. The design emerged from a plan to create a large site with geographically organized sections.
The name refers to Toronto and its role as a center for animal care in Canada. Visitors today see animals from different continents in zones designed to represent their native regions.
The grounds open daily in the morning and close in the afternoon, with last entry one hour before closing. Visitors can walk around the large site or use mobile aids to reach different sections.
The facility takes part in breeding programs for threatened species such as black-footed ferrets and Sumatran orangutans. Some of these efforts have helped reintroduce animals into their original habitats.
