Bowen Island, Island municipality in Howe Sound, Canada.
Bowen Island is a municipality located on an island in Howe Sound off the coast of British Columbia. It features forested areas, beaches, and two main commercial centers where locals and visitors find shops and services.
Spanish explorers called it Isla de Apodaca when they arrived in 1791, but the name changed after British maps were drawn. It was renamed after Rear Admiral James Bowen in the middle of the 1800s.
The Squamish First Nations called this place Nex̱wlélex̱wm and used it as hunting and gathering grounds for generations. The land held deep meaning in their way of living on these waters.
The island is reached by ferry from the mainland, with boats departing regularly from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver. The crossing takes roughly 20 minutes, making it a straightforward day trip or overnight visit.
The island is home to art galleries and studios where local artists create and sell their work. Many visitors discover these creative spaces only while wandering away from the main paths.
