Marcel-Léger Ecological Reserve

The Marcel-Léger Ecological Reserve encompasses Île aux Sternes, an artificial island in the Saint Lawrence River near Trois-Rivières where natural plants and nesting birds thrive today. The island emerged from river dredging and now functions as a sanctuary for local wildlife.

The reserve was established in 1981 under its original name reflecting the tern birds that nested there, then renamed decades later to honor an environmental leader. Its foundation followed the 1965 creation of the island itself through dredging operations.

The reserve honors Marcel Léger, a key figure in Quebec's environmental movement, whose work shaped how the region protects its natural spaces. This recognition reflects the value placed on conservation efforts in the community.

The reserve can be viewed from Route 138, which runs close to the island and offers a convenient vantage point for observation without disturbing wildlife. This roadside location makes it easy for travelers to stop and take in the natural scenery.

The island was artificially created in 1965 through dredging and now serves as a living laboratory where scientists track how native plants naturally establish themselves on new land. This ongoing observation makes the site a unique study location.
