Etobicoke, Administrative district in western Toronto, Canada
Etobicoke is an administrative district in western Toronto that stretches from Lake Ontario northward to Steeles Avenue. The area includes residential neighborhoods, commercial zones, and green spaces along the Humber River that runs through it.
The township formed in 1850 as an independent municipality with nearly three thousand inhabitants. In 1998 it joined Toronto when several cities merged to form a single larger municipality.
The name comes from a Mississauga word for alder tree, recalling the vegetation that once lined the waterways. Today the neighborhoods are home to residents from around the world who shape shops, restaurants, and community centers.
Several subway stations and expressways serve the area and connect it to downtown. Bus lines complement the network and make it easier to move within the different neighborhoods and shopping zones.
Some residential streets still show Tudor and Georgian building styles from an early 20th-century settlement project along the river. Developer Robert Home Smith planned entire neighborhoods with a unified architectural character at that time.
