Aurora, Administrative municipality in York Region, Canada
Aurora lies in York Region north of Toronto and extends over residential areas, commercial streets, and conservation lands along the Oak Ridges Moraine. The municipality includes parks, walking trails, and older village cores alongside modern developments that together form a small-town fabric.
The settlement began in 1854 as Machell's Corners, named after Richard Machell who acquired land there. Postmaster Charles Doan later renamed the place after the Roman goddess of dawn.
Theatre Aurora has presented stage productions since 1958 and shapes the cultural life of the small town. Audiences experience a traditional theatre scene that has grown over decades.
The GO train connects the town to downtown Toronto and runs more frequently on weekdays than weekends. Highway 404 passes through the eastern side and gives drivers direct access to the main streets of the municipality.
Former Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson spent his childhood here before gaining international recognition. He later received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work at the United Nations.
