John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, International airport in Mount Hope, Hamilton, Canada
John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport is an international airport in the Mount Hope neighborhood southwest of downtown Hamilton, Ontario. The facility operates two asphalt runways measuring 10,006 and 6,010 feet (3,050 and 1,832 meters) for passenger and cargo flights.
The site opened in 1940 as Mount Hope Airport and served as a Royal Canadian Air Force base during World War II. After the war ended, operations shifted to civil aviation and grew into a major cargo hub.
The facility operates Detour YHM, a terminal built from shipping containers that offers regional products from Hamilton businesses including Detour Coffee Roasters and Collective Arts Brewing. This local selection gives travelers a first taste of the city's culinary scene.
The airport sits about 6 nautical miles southwest of downtown Hamilton and is accessible by road. Travelers should allow enough time for check-in and security screening, especially on international connections.
In January 2023, Icelandic carrier Play resumed transatlantic service, connecting Hamilton directly to Reykjavík. This route allows onward connections to several European destinations through Iceland.
