Wasaga Beach, Provincial park beach in Ontario, Canada
Wasaga Beach is a town on the shore of Georgian Bay in Simcoe County, Ontario. The sandy shoreline runs for 14 kilometers along the coast and forms the longest freshwater beach in the world.
The bay served as a supply route for British forces heading to Fort Michilimackinac during the War of 1812. The settlement later grew into a resort community for visitors from Toronto and surrounding cities.
The name comes from the Algonquin word Nottawasaga and reflects the heritage of the Huron-Wendat people who first lived here. Families from across the region now visit to swim in the shallow water and walk along the shore.
The beach sits around 150 kilometers north of Toronto and is accessible by highway. Several beach sections offer swimming areas with shallow water, parking lots and connections to local bus routes during summer months.
The water warms to around 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit) in summer and stays comfortable for swimming until early September. In winter the coastline becomes a destination for cross-country skiers who follow groomed trails along the bay.
