Mitchell

Mitchell is a community in West Perth, Ontario, situated where Provincial Highways 8 and 23 meet. The Thames River flows through the area, which lies northwest of Stratford.

The Canada Company laid out the town plot in 1836, and William Hicks built the first log building along Huron Road in 1837. These early developments shaped the settlement in the area.

The Thames River Dam creates a deeper pool where fishing enthusiasts gather to catch different species of fish, including carp, bass, and perch. This gathering place reflects how the community connects with the water throughout the seasons.

The West Perth Wetlands offer walking trails, ponds, and picnic areas accessible throughout the year. The location is easily reached from the highway and provides opportunities for outdoor activities.

This community may be the only place in Ontario named after a person of African descent. This unusual naming choice makes it historically significant and noteworthy.
