Province of Avalon, National historic site and archaeological settlement in Ferryland, Canada

The archaeological site spans across a narrow strip of land on the eastern coast of Avalon Peninsula, featuring excavated colonial structures and artifacts.

George Calvert established this English colony in 1621 with twelve pioneers under Captain Edward Wynne's leadership, creating the first successful permanent settlement on Newfoundland.

The site contains a preserved forge, slate walls, and thousands of artifacts that demonstrate the daily life of early European settlers in North America.

Visitors can explore the archaeological excavations, interpretation center, and heritage gardens located 60 kilometers south of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Archaeological investigations revealed multiple intact colonial structures including a blacksmith shop with a stone anvil and walls standing over half a meter high.
