Brockville Tunnel, Railway tunnel in Brockville, Canada

The Brockville Tunnel is a railway passage running beneath downtown Brockville that stretches approximately 530 meters with a width of about 4.3 meters. Stone walls line the route while concrete paths form the floor, with mineral deposits and moisture visible on the surfaces throughout.

Construction started in 1854 and the first train passed through on December 31, 1860, making it Canada's first railway tunnel. This early engineering achievement allowed the community to develop as an important rail hub.

The tunnel serves as a public gathering space where visitors connect with the region's industrial heritage and learn about its role in early rail development. It reflects how communities transformed industrial infrastructure into places for shared experience.

Wear sturdy footwear since the ground is damp and mineral deposits cover the walls throughout. Conditions can be slippery in places, so visitors should take care when walking and consider bringing a light source for darker sections.

The interior has been fitted with modern LED lighting and recorded music, transforming this historic stone structure into a contemporary pedestrian and cycling pathway. This adaptation demonstrates how old infrastructure can be reimagined for present-day use.
