Capitol Theatre, Woodstock

Capitol Theatre on Dundas Street was a theatre in Woodstock with a large stage and balcony seating for audiences. After 1975, the upper section was converted into a second cinema space, creating two performance areas.

The building was constructed in 1893 as the Woodstock Opera House and initially served opera performances. In 1927, Famous Players Ltd took over the building and renamed it Capitol Theatre.

The theatre was where musicians performed live alongside silent films and local singers regularly took the stage. These performances shaped the entertainment life of the town for many decades.

The theatre is located on Dundas Street in Woodstock and was known for its different seating categories. Visitors should note that the building offered two separate performance spaces, which affected event scheduling.

The building hosted a major political debate between two Canadian government leaders. This event made the venue more than just an entertainment space and connected it to important moments in the nation's history.
