Ottawa Little Theatre, Community theatre in Downtown Ottawa, Canada.
The Ottawa Little Theatre is a community theatre in downtown Ottawa, situated on King Edward Avenue. The house seats several hundred people, and the company stages a full season of productions that runs from late winter through to December.
The company was founded in 1913 as the Ottawa Drama League, making it one of the oldest amateur theatre groups in Canada. A fire destroyed the building completely in 1970, but it was rebuilt and reopened within two years.
The Ottawa Little Theatre is a place where volunteers from the city perform in front of real audiences, not professional actors. The productions often draw from the English-language repertoire and tend to reflect stories that local people recognize.
The theatre is run entirely by volunteers, and booking ahead is a good idea, especially for popular productions. Checking the current season before your visit will help you plan which show you want to attend.
The photographer Yousuf Karsh visited the theatre regularly in the 1930s and refined his approach to light by photographing its productions. Those early experiments helped shape the style that later made him one of the most recognized portrait photographers of the 20th century.
