Kesagami Provincial Park

Kesagami Provincial Park, Provincial park in Cochrane District, Canada

Description

Kesagami Provincial Park is a wilderness reserve in Ontario's James Bay lowlands featuring flat terrain covered with peat bogs, muskegs, and fen meadows. The landscape consists of expansive wetland habitats interspersed with countless lakes and streams throughout the region.

History

The Hudson's Bay Company established a trading post called Mesackamee House on the shores of Kesagami Lake in 1777. The post operated for just two years before being abandoned as the company shifted its focus away from this remote area.

Culture

The name Kesagami comes from the Cree language and means 'warm water', reflecting the indigenous heritage of the region. Archaeological remains scattered through the park show evidence of long-term Cree presence and traditional practices.

Practical

This wilderness area can be reached only by aircraft or waterway, making it a truly remote destination. A single commercial lodge on the lake provides accommodation options for visitors prepared for an isolated experience.

Did you know?

The shore of Kesagami Lake features distinctive peat cliffs reaching up to 4 meters in height, sculpted by wave action over time. The lake also supports Ontario's largest population of northern pike, making it notable among anglers.
