Sandbanks Provincial Park, Provincial park in Burgeo, Canada
Sandbanks Provincial Park is a coastal park on Newfoundland's southern shore with over 7 kilometers of sandy beaches and a total area of about 2.3 square kilometers. The land features extensive sand dunes and native vegetation that shape the coastal environment.
The area was established as a protected natural reserve by the Newfoundland and Labrador provincial government in 1985. This designation aimed to preserve the coastal ecosystem and sand dunes from future changes.
Writer Farley Mowat lived in Burgeo during the 1960s and drew inspiration from these shores for his literary work. The place continues to represent a connection between human creativity and the natural landscape.
The park offers 30 camping spots without services and is open from late May through mid-September. You can reach it directly from Route 480 coming from Burgeo.
The beaches serve as nesting grounds for piping plovers, a near-threatened bird species that receives strict protection. Visitors may observe these rare birds during breeding season when certain beach sections are closed off.
