Wolfe-Montcalm Monument, Commemorative obelisk in Old Quebec, Canada.
The Wolfe-Montcalm Monument is a stone obelisk rising from the entrance of Governors Garden near Dufferin Terrace in Old Quebec City. The structure stands approximately 20 meters tall with names and inscriptions carved on its faces.
The monument was built in 1828 and stands as the oldest memorial in Quebec City. It was created to remember two generals from opposing armies who fell during the same battle in 1759.
The Latin inscriptions on white marble plaques tell a shared story of two generals whose names are carved on opposite sides of the obelisk. Visitors reading these texts can understand how two opposing leaders are remembered together in this place.
The monument sits in an easily accessible spot right at the entrance of Governors Garden with views toward Dufferin Terrace. The area is straightforward to find and offers a natural stopping point while exploring Old Quebec.
During the full reconstruction of the monument between 2010 and 2011, workers uncovered a time capsule hidden within the stone structure. The capsule held objects from the early and mid-1800s, offering a glimpse into the era shortly after the memorial was first erected.
