Jean Vauquelin, Bronze sculpture in Vauquelin Square, Montreal, Canada
The bronze statue, mounted on a granite pedestal, depicts Jean Vauquelin standing with arms extended backward, holding a flag nailed to a broken mast.
Created in 1930 by sculptor Eugene Benet, this monument commemorates the naval officer Jean Vauquelin during the Battle of Pointe-aux-Trembles in 1760.
The statue stands between the Old Courthouse and City Hall, facing Nelson's Column across Place Jacques-Cartier, representing French naval heritage in Montreal.
The monument measures 2.8 meters in height on a 4-meter pedestal, with an inscription reading 'Vauquelin, lieutenant de vaisseau, 1728-1772, Louisbourg - Quebec'.
A replica of this Montreal statue was installed in Dieppe, France, Vauquelin's birthplace, as a gift from the Canadian government in September 1930.
