Woodward's 43, Mixed-use skyscraper in Downtown Eastside, Vancouver, Canada
Woodward's 43 is a 122-meter tall building with 41 stories above ground and 2 underground levels located in Downtown Eastside. The structure combines residential units, retail and office spaces, along with civic facilities in a single mixed-use development.
The building was completed in 2010 on the site of the former Woodward's Department Store, which shut down in 1993. Its construction marked a major redevelopment effort to transform the neighborhood.
The glowing W sign on the facade recalls the original department store that once anchored this neighborhood in people's everyday lives. It keeps the connection to the area's retail past visible for everyone who passes by.
The building is easily accessible by foot with good transit connections and features multiple entrances for public circulation. The mixed-use nature means the space remains active throughout the day with different groups of visitors and residents.
A large glass artwork by Stan Douglas in the atrium depicts civil unrest that happened in the neighborhood around 1971. The installation quietly tells a complex local story to those who pass through the building.
