Armoury

The Armoury is a large rectangular building with prominent square towers and substantial round-headed windows painted white. Inside, it contains multiple training areas, classrooms, storage spaces, and a spacious drill hall for various activities.

The building was constructed in 1905 when Canada was reforming its military forces and seeking to strengthen militia training after the South African War. This nationwide initiative led to the establishment of similar facilities across the country to improve national defence readiness.

The building serves the community as a gathering place for events and functions, welcoming local people for ceremonies and exhibitions throughout the year. This dual purpose has made it an important meeting point in St. Catharines life.

The building displays elements of Baronial architecture with crenellated walls and buttresses, reflecting early 20th century Canadian military construction standards. These design features were uncommon for functional buildings of the time, giving the structure a distinctive appearance.
