Zurich Airport, International airport in Kloten, Switzerland
Zurich Airport is an international airport located north of the city, spreading over several municipalities within the canton and operating with three runways and multiple terminals. The passenger buildings are connected by long corridors and contain shops, dining options, and waiting areas with large windows overlooking the tarmac.
The site served as a military airfield from 1921 until it was redeveloped and opened as a civil airport for international traffic in 1953. Expansions in the following decades brought new terminals and longer runways to meet growing air travel demand.
The transit areas include quiet spaces with reading corners where passengers wait between flights without needing to visit commercial zones. Families often use the play areas on the upper levels, which are designed to keep children occupied during layovers.
Underground trains run every ten minutes to central Zurich, with the journey taking around a quarter of an hour during most of the day. Visitors should allow extra time for security checks and possible queues when heading to check-in or boarding gates.
An observation deck on level B allows visitors to watch aircraft take off and land at close range, with the Alps visible in the background on clear days. The platform is freely accessible and attracts not only travelers but also photographers and aviation enthusiasts from the region.
