Raron, Administrative district in Valais, Switzerland
The district of Rarogne spans across two geographically separate regions within the canton of Valais, divided by the Brig district between them.
First documented between 1101 and 1200 as Rarogni, Rarogne developed from a medieval settlement with a fortification built on the hill west of Heidnischbiel.
The Church of St. German, established around the 8th century, evolved into the Church of St. Romanus in the early 16th century following flood damage.
The district contains multiple stone buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, including the Maxenhaus, Zentriegenhaus, and Zmilacherhaus, which remain visible today.
Engineering projects between 1865 and 1885 transformed local swampland into agricultural territory, enabling the district's expansion into industrial development.
