Raron, Administrative district in Valais, Switzerland
Rarogne is an administrative district in the canton of Valais that spans two geographically separate regions. The two parts are separated by the Brig district and contain numerous stone buildings dating from different historical periods.
The district was documented between 1101 and 1200, emerging from a medieval settlement on the landscape. A fortification built on the hill west of Heidnischbiel shaped its early development and strategic importance.
The Church of St. Germanus shapes the village character, with roots reaching back to the 8th century. Later transformed into the Church of St. Romanus, it remains a focal point for residents and visitors today.
The district contains several stone buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries that remain visible today and show the local architecture. Visitors can discover these structures like the Maxenhaus, Zentriegenhaus, and Zmilacherhaus while exploring the area.
Between 1865 and 1885, major engineering projects transformed swampland into agricultural fields in the district. This land reclamation work later enabled economic development and regional growth in new directions.
