Aare Gorge, Narrow Canyon in Switzerland
Aare Gorge is a section of the river Aare that carves through a limestone ridge near the town of Meiringen.
Used as a passage way since Celtic-Roman times, the first walkway in Aare Gorge was built in 1889.
Due to its unique geological formation, it has long been a subject of fascination among poets and artists alike.
Visitors can walk on secure footbridges and passages along its 1.4 kilometre length.
In winter, the flowing water freezes into spectacular formations, transforming the canyon into a world of ice.
