Stadion Wankdorf, Football stadium in Breitfeld, Bern, Switzerland
Stadion Wankdorf is a football arena in the Breitfeld district of Bern, with black and yellow seating for roughly 30,000 spectators arranged in a rectangular layout with partial roof cover. The structure consists of four independent stands running along each side of the pitch, connected by covered walkways.
The new construction replaced the original Wankdorf Stadium from 1925 in 2005, which hosted the 1954 football World Cup final between the German and Hungarian national teams. The modern facility was completed in just under three years and has served as home ground for the Bern club since its opening.
The name comes from the Wankdorf area where the site sits, and locals often refer to it as Stade de Suisse, recalling the partnership with the national telecommunications company. Match days draw many families who stroll through the surrounding pathways before and after games, stopping at nearby cafés.
The facility sits in the northern part of the city and is easily visible from surrounding residential neighborhoods. Visitors should note that match days often lead to increased foot traffic in the area, and reaching the site may take some time.
The roof construction houses a large solar installation that provides part of the energy for running the facility. In winter 2007, the pitch was converted into a temporary ice hockey rink, bringing together over 30,000 spectators for a local derby.
