St. Pierre Cathedral
St. Pierre Cathedral, 12th century cathedral in Genève-Cité, Switzerland
The cathedral combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Neoclassical architectural elements, with a monumental facade designed by architect Benedetto Alfieri in the 18th century.
The building served as a Catholic cathedral from the 4th century until 1535, when it became the central location of the Protestant Reformation under John Calvin.
The cathedral complex includes an underground archaeological site spanning three thousand square meters, documenting the settlement history from Roman Geneva through the Middle Ages.
Visitors can access the cathedral Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to 17:30 and Sunday from 12:00 to 17:30 to explore the interiors and archaeological site.
Archaeological excavations revealed three overlapping religious buildings from the 10th to 13th centuries, used for sacred rites, sacraments, and preaching.

Geneva offers a diverse heritage combining history, science, and nature on the shores of Lake Geneva. The city houses institutions such as the Palace of Nations and CERN, religious buildings like Saint Pierre Cathedral where Calvin preached, as well as cultural spaces like the Patek Philippe Museum dedicated to Swiss watchmaking. The Jet d'Eau, an emblematic fountain shooting water 140 meters high, marks the lake landscape. Visitors also explore the collections at the Natural History Museum, walk through botanical gardens housing alpine and tropical plants, or visit Maison Tavel, the oldest medieval house in the city. The Bains des Pâquis offer swimming and relaxation by the lake with views of Mont Blanc. This concentration of historic, scientific, and natural sites makes Geneva a comprehensive destination for discovering the Swiss Romand heritage.
