Bottmingen Castle

Bottmingen Castle is a medieval structure in Switzerland surrounded by a water-filled moat and constructed with stone walls. The building displays early Baroque features influenced by French design from the 18th century.

The castle was built in the second half of the 13th century and initially belonged to the Kämmerer family, who served as officials to the Bishops of Basel. Major renovations took place around 1720, reshaping the structure with new design elements.

The castle reflects how Swiss noble families adopted French design preferences in the 18th century, blending medieval roots with baroque refinement. Walking through the rooms and courtyards, you can see this mix of two different architectural worlds.

The castle is located at Schlossgasse 9 in Bottmingen and now operates as a restaurant and event venue. Since it serves primarily for celebrations and dining, accessibility may vary depending on private events or functions happening on any given day.

After its 1720 transformation by Johannes Deucher, the castle became known for its role connected to wine storage and cellar activities for Basel. This historical link to wine culture still influences how the space is used for gathering and celebration today.
