Hallenstadion, Multi-purpose indoor arena in Oerlikon, Switzerland.
Hallenstadion is a large indoor venue in Oerlikon, a neighborhood north of central Zurich. The oval structure accommodates different kinds of events, with seating adjusted depending on the occasion, so capacity varies between sports matches and musical performances.
Architect Karl Egender designed this hall, which opened on November 4, 1939, and quickly became the main event venue in the city. Major renovations took place during 2004 and 2005, updating technical equipment and improving visitor comfort throughout the building.
The name combines the German word for large hall with the sporting character of the building, making its dual purpose clear to visitors. Audiences here experience international tours and home ice hockey games, with the mood shifting between focused sports energy and celebratory concert atmosphere depending on the event.
Access is through several entrances around the building, with marked pathways leading to different seating sections. Visitors arriving by public transport find Oerlikon train station within walking distance, while those driving can use parking facilities in the surrounding area.
Since 1954, a multi-day cycling race takes place here annually, with riders competing on a special wooden track installed inside. This tradition makes the hall one of the few places in Europe where track cycling is regularly held in a large multipurpose building.
