Lago di Palagnedra, lake at Palagnedra, Ticino, Switzerland
Lago di Palagnedra is a reservoir created by damming the Melezza river in the Centovalli region of Ticino, Switzerland. The lake spans approximately 25 hectares at nearly 490 meters elevation, nestled between forested hillsides and rocky ridges.
The Palagnedra dam was completed in 1952 with a height of approximately 72 meters. Since its construction, the reservoir has served the region for more than 70 years in managing water flow and generating hydroelectric power.
The lake takes its name from the nearby village of Palagnedra situated above the water. Local residents have incorporated this reservoir into their daily routines for generations, relying on it for irrigation and water supply.
The lake is readily accessible from the village of Palagnedra and offers quiet paths for walking along the water. Facilities are minimal in the immediate area, so visitors should plan to explore at a relaxed pace without expecting commercial amenities.
The railway connecting Domodossola in Italy to Locarno in Switzerland runs along the north side of the lake, offering daily travelers views of the water and surrounding mountains. This historic rail route creates an unexpected connection between two countries precisely at this location.
