Sighignola

Sighignola is a mountain summit in the Swiss canton of Ticino that rises to 1,314 meters and forms the natural border between the Italian region of Lombardy and Switzerland. The peak is accessible from both sides, with the Italian slopes offering easier access than the steeper Swiss approaches.

The summit was home to military fortifications during the First World War as part of the Cadorna Line, built to protect the Italian border against potential Swiss military action. These defensive structures show how the mountain played a role in border security during a conflict that affected the alpine region.

A memorial chapel sits near the summit entrance, honoring soldiers who lost their lives during the First World War in this mountain region. The location keeps alive the memory of those who died at this border location.

The easiest route to the summit runs from Lanzo d'Intelvi on the Italian side, as the Swiss slopes are considerably steeper and more challenging to climb. Wear sturdy footwear and allow several hours for the hike, as the paths can be rocky and uneven.

An ambitious cable car project from 1969 was meant to connect this summit with nearby Campione d'Italia but was dismantled after a 2009 agreement between the two countries. The abandoned project remains a curious reminder of cross-border infrastructure plans that never came to full completion.
