Hauser & Wirth, International art gallery in Zurich, Switzerland
Hauser & Wirth is an art gallery in Zurich presenting contemporary works by international artists. The building spans several floors of a converted industrial structure with generous exhibition spaces and an attached bookshop for art publications.
Iwan Wirth, Manuela Wirth and Ursula Hauser founded the gallery in 1992 inside an Art Deco villa. The first exhibitions featured works by Alexander Calder and Joan Miró before the location moved later to the current industrial building.
The name combines the founding families Hauser and Wirth, who present and share contemporary art with the public here. Visitors walk through changing exhibitions by different artists in bright rooms with high ceilings.
The gallery opens its rooms from Tuesday to Saturday, and guided tours can be requested in advance. Admission is usually free, allowing visitors to explore the exhibitions and bookshop at their own pace.
The gallery runs its own artist residency program, welcoming creators from around the world for longer stays. It also operates its own publishing house, releasing detailed catalogues and monographs about the exhibited artists.
