St. Leonhardskirche, Gothic Revival church in St. Gallen, Switzerland
The St. Leonhardskirche exhibits pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and a prominent clock tower that marks the skyline of western St. Gallen.
Berlin architect Johannes Vollmer designed this Protestant church, which was inaugurated on May 1, 1887 after two years of construction.
The church changed its function from regular Protestant services to become an ecumenical project called Open Church St. Leonhard in 1997.
Following a severe fire in December 2007 that destroyed the roof, the building underwent extensive renovation and now functions as a cultural center.
The structure survived a major fire that required 200 firefighters to save the tower, leading to a complete restoration completed in 2013.
