New castle Bümpliz, Manor house in Bümpliz village, Switzerland
The New Castle Bümpliz is a manor house with symmetrical design and large windows, situated within landscaped gardens in the western district of Bern. The building displays classical architectural features characteristic of 18th-century construction and shapes the visual character of the neighborhood.
In 1742, Daniel Tschiffely commissioned architect Albrecht Stürler to design and build this manor house, replacing an earlier structure that no longer suited contemporary needs. This new residence was constructed during a period when such buildings reflected the social standing of their owners.
The castle served different functions through centuries, from a noble residence to a mental health facility and later as administrative offices.
The property is located at Bümplizstrasse 97 and now serves as a venue for ceremonies and weddings, which means visitor access may be limited depending on event schedules. It is best to check in advance whether private events are taking place to avoid disrupting ongoing activities.
From 1839 to 1849, the building housed calmer patients while those requiring more intensive care stayed in the adjacent older castle nearby. This separation reveals an early approach to specialized accommodation within care facilities.
