New château, Manor house in Oberdiessbach, Switzerland
The new château is a country estate in Oberdiessbach with Mannerist design, two side wings, and a central stone building featuring a double-arched entry portico. The structure displays mullioned windows throughout and carefully designed interior spaces with refined furnishings and decorative elements.
Albert von Wattenwyl commissioned the construction of this country residence in 1668, which became one of the most notable examples of French Renaissance architecture in the region. The family maintained ownership through the following generations, shaping its long-term development and preservation.
The interior spaces display crafted details such as the coffered ceiling in the ground floor hall and French tapestries with landscape scenes that reflect the taste of the 17th century. These furnishings offer insight into how the Bernese aristocracy lived and arranged their homes during that era.
The building can be visited under specific conditions throughout the year, offering views of its interior design and furnishings. It is advisable to check visit conditions beforehand since the property remains in family ownership and is still inhabited.
The interior staircase represented an innovative solution for Swiss country residences of that period, showing a new approach to space arrangement. This design feature later influenced how other similar buildings organized their internal circulation.
