St. Nikolaus parish church, Catholic parish church in Altstätten, Switzerland
St. Nikolaus is a Catholic parish church in Altstätten that combines Neoclassical forms with Baroque elements, particularly visible in the west facade with its tall arched windows across two levels. Inside are a three-manual Walcker organ with 40 registers and pedals, along with ornate stuccowork and carved reliefs.
Built between 1794 and 1798 by architects Johann Jakob Haltiner and Hans Ulrich Haltiner, the church replaced an earlier worship site from 1278. The site had served the community's faith for centuries before this structure with its contemporary design took its place.
The name honors Saint Nicholas, venerated as a protector of travelers and merchants, reflecting the community's historic faith traditions. Inside, handcrafted details created by local artisans like Peter Anton Moosbrugger shape the interior character that visitors experience today.
Access to the church is through the main entrance on the facade, with interior spaces open for visitors to explore the architecture and furnishings at their own pace. Visit outside of services to experience the building without disrupting ongoing worship.
A wooden crucifix dating to 1500 hangs above the choir arch and comes from the previous church demolished in 1794. This artwork survived demolition and was integrated into the new building, where it continues to hold religious meaning for visitors today.
