Zürich Zoo Masoala Hall, Rainforest hall in Zürich Zoo, Switzerland
The Masoala Hall spans 11,000 square meters within Zürich Zoo, containing over 17,000 plants from 450 species and 50 vertebrate species from Madagascar.
The construction of this indoor rainforest began in 2001 on the former Fluntern shooting range site and opened its doors in June 2003.
The indoor rainforest promotes environmental education through guided tours, workshops, and displays about Madagascar's endangered species and conservation efforts.
The facility maintains temperatures between 18 and 35 degrees Celsius with 80 percent humidity through specialized climate control systems.
The hall operates a tree nursery in partnership with Madagascar's Forest Seed Bank to propagate native species like rosewood and ebony.
