Zürich Zoo Masoala Hall

Masoala Hall is a large rainforest indoor space within Zürich Zoo where thousands of plants grow in thick clusters and numerous animals live between trees and dense undergrowth. The space is structured so you can explore different forest layers, from the ground level up to higher areas.

The building was constructed on land that previously served as a shooting range and opened in 2003. This project was an important step for the zoo to bring a piece of Madagascar to Switzerland.

The space takes its name from Madagascar's Masoala Peninsula and gives visitors direct insights into this region's ecosystem through the living environment around them. You encounter not just animals and plants here, but also experience how closely they depend on each other.

When you visit, be prepared for warm and humid conditions since the space recreates a genuine rainforest climate. It helps to move slowly through the dense areas and take time to spot the hidden animals.

The facility runs a breeding program for threatened plant species from Madagascar in partnership with local conservation organizations. This work ensures that many plants rare in nature are preserved for future generations.
