Meyersche Stollen, Mining tunnel system in Aarau, Switzerland
Meyersche Stollen is an underground tunnel system beneath Aarau featuring water channels and passages. The network extends several kilometers under the city through interconnected sections.
Johann Rudolf Meyer built these tunnels between 1791 and 1810 to drain waterlogged land and supply water to his operations. The system served a dye works and silk ribbon factory with water and served industrial needs.
The tunnels reveal how the city depended on water management for its industries. Underground waterways linked local production directly to the surrounding landscape.
Guided tours through select tunnel sections are organized by local groups. The passages maintain stable temperatures year-round, making them accessible in any season.
A viewing window into the tunnels was created during the 2010 renovation of Aarau station. Visitors can see a section of this industrial heritage directly from the updated station.
