Monbijoubrücke, Road bridge in Bern, Switzerland
Description
Monbijoubrücke is a prestressed concrete bridge for vehicles spanning 337.5 meters across the Aare River. It connects the Monbijou and Kirchenfeld quarters and serves as a major traffic link in the city.
History
It was built between 1960 and 1962 by engineers Hartenbach and Wenger. Its construction responded to Bern's post-war need to improve transportation infrastructure.
Culture
The bridge takes its name from the 1775 country house Mon Bijou located at Monbijoustrasse 5/7 nearby. This naming reflects the local history and connects the structure to the residential character of the area.
Practical
The bridge has walkways on both sides for pedestrians and cyclists. Since 2022, vehicle lanes were converted to bus lanes, so the layout has changed for car drivers.
Did you know?
From the pedestrian walkway, you can see the southern side of the Federal Palace and the Old Town spread below. This view turns the crossing into more than just a transport link.
