Gilgenberg castle ruin

Gilgenberg Castle ruin consists of stone remains perched on a natural rock outcrop at about 710 meters in elevation, surrounded by thick forest. The fragments show the foundation and lower walls of the medieval fortification that once controlled this terrain.

The castle was built during the Middle Ages as part of a defensive network protecting trade routes through northern Swiss valleys. Over time it was abandoned and gradually deteriorated into the ruin visible today.

For generations, this fortress was a landmark that shaped how locals saw their landscape and understood their region's identity. Today, people still recognize it as a key part of their surroundings and heritage.

The marked hiking trail from Zullwil village reaches the ruins in about ten minutes and is relatively straightforward. In wet weather, some sections may become slippery, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

The ruins sit on a natural rock spur that opens views across the forested valley in multiple directions. This vantage point offers a perspective on the wooded landscape that many hikers passing through the area never experience.
