Festung Wissiflue, Military fortress in Nidwalden, Switzerland.
Festung Wissiflue is a military fortress located in the forests of Nidwalden, west of Wolfenschiessen at an elevation of 850 meters. Underground tunnels spanning 1400 meters connect sleeping quarters, ammunition stores, and generator rooms that formed the defense system of the installation.
Construction began in June 1942 and tunnel and concrete work was completed by September 1943. In 1944, 15-centimeter cannons were installed to make the facility operational.
The fortress was part of Switzerland's defense system during World War II and shows the effort made to protect the Alpine regions. Visitors can understand today the massive construction and the protective function of this location.
Access is by way of narrow forest paths that can be reached on foot, with sturdy shoes recommended. The underground spaces require good physical fitness and comfort in confined areas.
An aerial cable car system stretching 650 meters connected the fortress to lower supply points while overcoming a height difference of over 300 meters. This engineering solution allowed continuous supply to the elevated facility during wartime.
