Schulmuseum Bern in Köniz

The Schulmuseum Bern in Köniz occupies two floors of the Haberhuus building and displays over 25,000 objects spanning five centuries of educational history. The collections document teaching materials, school furniture, and instructional resources from various time periods.

The museum originated from teacher Kurt Hofer's private collection and was founded in 1995. The institution was officially registered as a foundation in 2007 and opened to the public in 2008.

The museum displays how classrooms looked in different eras and what materials teachers used to instruct their students. Visitors can see how teaching methods changed across generations.

The museum opens on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays during afternoon hours. The location sits within the Haberhuus complex alongside a church, gallery, and music school, allowing you to combine your visit with other activities in the building.

The collection includes rare school objects like old slate tablets, handwritten lesson plans, and primitive calculating devices that reveal how basic instruction once was. These everyday items offer visitors direct insight into the laborious teaching methods of earlier centuries.
