Lago d'Origlio, Lake in Ticino, Switzerland

Lago d'Origlio is a small lake in the Ticino region of Switzerland, sitting at around 1,365 feet (416 meters) above sea level and surrounded by trees, fields, and marshy stretches of shore. The lake is shallow and lined by a walking path that loops around it, used by families, walkers, and people watching wildlife.

The land around Lago d'Origlio has been shaped by farming for thousands of years, with traces of early forest clearing dating back roughly 7,500 years. The sediment at the bottom of the lake holds charcoal, cereal pollen, and plant remains that scientists have used to piece together how the landscape changed over time.

At the northern end of the lake, reeds and water lilies grow along the shore, drawing birds, dragonflies, and frogs throughout the warmer months. Nearby, on a hill called Matterone, an organization called Pro Specie Rara tends to rare old fruit tree varieties that have largely disappeared elsewhere.

The lake sits close to Lugano and is easy to reach by car or bike, with parking areas available nearby. Fishing is allowed with a license, which can be bought at the town hall or local shops, but swimming in the lake is not permitted.

Although the lake is small and shallow, its sediment layers have acted as a natural archive, helping scientists trace how people farmed and altered the land going back thousands of years. The northeast corner is also a regular breeding spot for frogs, newts, and other amphibians, which gather there in numbers each spring.
