MAMCO, Contemporary art museum in Plainpalais, Switzerland
MAMCO is a museum of modern and contemporary art in Geneva located in a restored four-story building that once functioned as a physics laboratory. The collection holds over 6,000 works spread across multiple floors with varied artistic approaches and mediums.
The museum was founded in 1973 and officially opened to the public in 1994 after extensive renovation of the former laboratory building. This transformation established it as Switzerland's largest contemporary art institution.
The museum showcases artists who question traditional art forms and work across different mediums and approaches. You can see contemporary practices here that do not fit into conventional categories.
The museum is open from midday on weekdays and from late morning on weekends, allowing time for browsing the floors at your own pace. Storage lockers are available in the basement if you need to stow belongings during your visit.
The third floor features a complete reconstruction of a Parisian room that focuses on conceptual art rather than physical objects displayed in it. This installation demonstrates how contemporary artists work with space itself as an artistic medium.
